Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education Committees


Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee

Chair: Janice Sabin
Co-Chair: Pamela Nagasawa

Membership: Faculty, Staff and Students

Purpose: The goals of the EDI committee include identifying and implementing EDI related faculty and staff training needs, and identifying and proposing integration of EDI best practices into departmental policies and procedures. The BIME EDI Committee meets 3-4 times/year. Members of the EDI committee have the opportunity to voluntarily participate in School of Medicine EDI symposia throughout the year. BIME has been a EDI leader in the SOM. For example, we are the first department to institute EDI related search committee training and adding valuing work on diversity in appointment and promotion to our A & P document.

 

Curriculum Committee

Chair: Neil Abernethy

Membership: BHI Faculty and Students

Purpose: The curriculum committee is responsible for reviewing the Biomedical and Health Informatics graduate program curriculum to ensure that the breadth and depth of the curriculum meets the ever changing landscape of informatics and its multi-faceted applications. The committee formulates and presents recommendations to the department faculty and chair for consideration and potential adoption. The committee also files all required course change or new course forms with the UW registrar.

 

Faculty Search/Recruitment Committee

Chair: Varies

Membership: Faculty and Identified Stakeholders

Purpose: Search committees are formed ad hoc when a faculty position is open for recruitment. The committee is responsible for screening, pre-interviewing and identifying a final pool of top candidates to invite for in-person interviews with the entire department and position associated stakeholders.

 

Admissions Committee

Chair: John Gennari

Membership: Faculty and Students

Purpose: The admissions committee reviews applications to the Biomedical and Health Informatics graduate program, interviews qualified candidates and offers admission to top candidates.

 

Qualifying Exam Committee

Chair: Trevor Cohen

Membership: BHI Teaching Faculty

Purpose: The committee is charged with creating, administering, and grading the qualifying exam for PhD students.

 

Biomedical and Health Informatics Executive Committee

Chair: Peter Tarczy-Hornoch

Membership: Department Chair, Graduate Program Director, CIPCT Co-Director, Department Administrator

Purpose: The committee is charged with reviewing current issues and challenges the division of Biomedical and Health Informatics faces and makes decisions on key issues and policy recommendations to the department faculty for review and approval. The committee invites key stakeholders involved in particular issues to join on an ad hoc basis.

 

Medical Education and Evaluation (MEE) Executive Committee

Chair: Peter Tarczy-Hornoch

Membership: Department Chair, MEE Division Head, Department Administrator

Purpose: The committee is charged with reviewing current issues and challenges the division of Medical Education and Evaluation faces and makes decisions on key issues and policy recommendations to the department faculty for review and approval. The committee invites key stakeholders involved in particular issues to join on an ad hoc basis.

 

Student Progress Committee

Chair: Graduate Program Director

Membership: All BHI faculty

Purpose: This committee meets quarterly to review all BHI graduate students and to assess their status with respect to satisfactory student progress. Annually, the committee creates letters of congratulations, commending students on progress and notable successes. Quarterly, as needed, the committee issues Warning and/or Probation letters to those students not making satisfactory progress.

 

Advancement and Promotion Committee

Chair: Peter Tarczy-Hornoch

Membership: Faculty

Purpose: When a faculty member is up for promotion, all faculty superior in rank convene on an ad hoc basis to review promotion materials and vote on recommendation to promote.
